Digital Photo Workshop
by Bevin Bering

Bevin began photographing at a very early age, won a scholarship from the Association of Texas Photography
Instructors for her high school portfolio and went on
to study photography and the history of photography at
Emory University. She has studied photography all over
the world, including Other Americas Photo Workshops in
Mexico, the Maine Photographic Workshops in Rockport,
ME, the Instituto Allende in San Miguel, and the
Glassel School of Art in Houston, Texas. She has studied
under such notables as Sally Gall, Dan Borris, Nancy
Marshall and Geoff Winningham. Collectors of her work include, Bracewell Guilliani, Wachovia and many other private collectors. Bevin believes that that digital photography has endless possibilities and is only limited by the imagination.
“Falling in Love with Your Digital Camera”
Hacienda de los Santos is proud and pleased to announce a comprehensive week-long course that will take you from the first step in image-making—capturing a photograph--through to the final step of storing and preserving your photographs. The instructor will also introduce several valuable tools to assist in your processing and workflow.
Each day will begin with an optional morning shoot, followed by presentation. Bevin Bering, a Houston-based photographer and curator of the Bering and James gallery, will offer presentations such as the differences between digital and analogue photography, photo composition, and printing materials. We will also have time for hands-on, interactive classes that will cover topics such as getting your images into the digital environment, image adjustment, and any specific concerns you may have about your camera or pictures. At the end of the morning sessions Bevin will send you off with the charge to relax and explore Alamos, and also to take pictures for us to work with the next day.
This course is ideal for someone who loves to photograph, but still has questions and concerns about digital imaging. While we will cover a lot of information, the course is about having fun and walking away with some knowledge and confidence that will help you explore the world photographically.
What To Bring:
- A digital camera! Either Point and Shoot or Single Lens Reflex
- Memory Cards: The more memory the better! Preferably 2 (two) 1GB cards, or more

TROPICAL DECIDUOUS FOREST & SPANISH COLONIAL ALAMOS
“Alamos represents one of the finest examples of old Spanish colonial architecture. The city has gradually been restored over the past fifty years, with considerable assistance from expatriate Americans. In the Alamos area, we encounter pristine tropical deciduous forest for the first time. The Alamos area represents the Northern extent of this habitat that stretches all the way to Costa Rica. The Rio Cuchijaqui provides a rich riparian garden for many of the tropical species.” Dr. Forrest Davis
We’ll be spending four nights in the Five-star, Hacienda de los Santos, (member, “Small Luxury Hotels of the World”).

Hacienda Thai Cooking School

Thai Cooking to Delight Your Palette
by
Deirdre Pain
of “Malee’s Thai Bistro”
Scottsdale, Arizona
We felt this would be a very non-traditional & delicious way to spend Thanksgiving Morning.
Classes will be held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings and space must be reserved. There are only 14 seats.
Each class (not hands on, but a demonstration, with recipes included) is from 10:00 a.m.-Noonish and is held in the old Hacienda Cocina.
Class is followed by a luncheon, on the Portal
or the Hacienda Comedor, of the scrumptious food made in class that day. Cost per person is $40 per class and includes lunch with a glass of wine.
(We are excited to present this Asian Venue in Mexico. This shows how the same ingredients, that we use in Mexican cuisine, are similar to several world cultures.)
In the late 70’s Deirdre Pain, a social worker fell in love with Thai cuisine, purely by accident. The love affair grew and in 1987, she gave up her social work career to open a Thai restaurant that she felt would best reflect the elegance and excitement of Thai food. In the Phoenix Valley Thai restaurants were small family owned businesses with little or no amenities; Deirdre was determined to change this experience. Over the past 20 years, Malees Thai Bistro has received numerous awards, including Zagut’s top rating, Best of Phoenix ( too many times to count), New York Times Travel section, two years in a row, and just this month received the New Times Reader’s Choice award for 2007. In 2002, Deirdre opened her second restaurant which not only serves award-winning Thai food but has added a full Sushi restaurant. The combination of these two spectacular cuisines has been a winner. For more information and full menu, go to maleesthaibistro.com.

Hacienda Art Show
Featuring The Work of Daan Hoekstra
December 23rd-January 3rd

Alamos artist Daan Hoekstra began his studies in 1980 at the University of Dallas. He later studied with Taos artist Ray Vinella, traditional realist Richard Lack, and buon fresco artist Mark Balma. Daan came to Alamos 7 years ago to work on mural commissions in a hacienda. Attracted by the tranquil setting and the friendly people, he decided to stay in Alamos. He has painted several murals in the area, including murals for the altar of the Iglesia Del Sagrado Corazon in nearby Navojoa. Through workshops and his small studio-school in Navojoa, has become known around Sonora as a teacher.
Daan’s current work attempts to capture the spirit of the Alamos landscape, as well as the dignity and values of its inhabitants.
More information about Hoekstra, and more images of his work can be found at www.hoekstrastudio.com
More details to follow on this exciting show of sale of Daan’s work.
Hacienda Christmas

We don’t dream of a White Christmas at the Hacienda, we dream of a Spiritual, Relaxing, Warm Days, Cool Nights and Fun Filled Celebration. We dream of options…..sleeping late, reading a book by one of the four pools, being waited upon at your beckon call, dancing or listening to live salsa or romantic music, enjoying fine food, walking hand in hand over the cobble stoned streets in the village, no pressure, being embraced by another culture, meeting other Hacienda guests, having a great massage, sitting in front of a fireplace, great conversations, riding a horse, going with Jim into the outback in 6X6 Pinzgauer (google this one), but most of all taking time
to love and be loved at your own pace.
That is a “Hacienda de los Santos” Christmas.
This season we will be doing two Holiday packages, which include a private charter from either Phoenix or Tucson in a 9 seat Grand Caravan private aircraft directly to the Alamos airport. Passports are required for flight.
The “Christmas Experience” will have an arrival on December 23rd with a departure on December 27th.
Just imagine a candle lit procession, with soft guitar music, as Joseph leads a very pregnant and tired Mary through a barrio close to the Hacienda. The evening is crisp and they are refused entry at each stop. We follow along and feel their pain and disappointment. Then the huge 18th century two ton Hacienda doors open and they are lead to an authentic manager created by the Hacienda family. Many tears are shed on this journey as we finally “get it.” The baby is born and the Celebration begins. Alamos is not about gifts…it’s about feeling. And the feelings are shared by all, guests, locals and staff. It is in the air everywhere and you will know why you spent this Christmas at the Hacienda.
Let this “experience” be your gift.

OVERVIEW
For several years now, our trips to friendly Sonora, Mexico have been in great demand. The colonial town of Alamos has especially charmed our guests. This year, we have decided to offer a trip exclusively to Alamos. We are especially pleased to offer to our guests a singularly unique lodging in Alamos: The Hacienda de los Santos, a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World.
Hacienda de Los Santos was built in the late 17th century for a wealthy silver baron. It has been lovingly restored and expanded by the Swickard family: Jim, Nancy and daughter, Jamie. The Swickards live on the premises and manage the The Hacienda. Their warm hospitality makes the Inn that much more attractive, and they typically join guests at the gourmet dinners served in their fine restaurant. Guests will be staying in spacious mini-suites. The bar offers over 500 different Tequilas, perhaps the most extensive collection anywhere. The on-site spa offers a full menu of treatments at a reasonable cost. Four swimming pools are available on grounds to guests. We are confident that your stay at the Hacienda will be an experience you will never forget!

Fresco Painting Workshops
in Álamos, Sonora, México

Fresco is a technique used for mural painting. Most of the murals painted by Diego Rivera, for example, were done in fresco. The Maya Indians did fresco paintings in the Pre-Columbian era, as did the inhabitants of Pompeii.
Now you can learn this ancient technique in a simple, introductory five-day workshop in the beautiful colonial town of Alamos, Sonora.
You will learn every step of the fresco process, including preparing the plaster, plastering a fresco panel, how to grind pigments, and which pigments to use. Each student will paint at least one fresco panel on terracotta, the traditional support for practicing fresco technique.
Classes are open to students ages 16 and up. One does not need to be an artist to learn and appreciate the process that Rivera and Orozco used.
Location and hours: Workshops will be held Monday thru Friday, from 9 AM to 1 PM at the Casa de Cultura, Loma Guadalupe, in Alamos.
Instructor: Daan Hoekstra
Dates:
January 14- 18, 2008
February 4- 8, 2008
March 10- 14, 2008
Cost: $250 for the five day workshop, or $125 for Alamos residents. Materials included. Limited to 5 participants per workshop. Proceeds benefit a program to offer workshops to Mexican artists and paint public frescos in Alamos.

The internationally acclaimed violinist STEVEN MOECKEL has appeared as soloist with orchestras in Europe and America. His extensive command of the solo repertoire includes the Elgar, Tschaikovsky, Mozart, Beethoven, Sibelius and Berg concertos as well as the works of Ysaye. As chamber musician, he has appeared at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago, performing with Leon Fleisher and Menachem Pressler as well as in other events in the U.S. He also performed as violinist of the Makart Trio Salzburg with Erika Frieser and Dana Micacoi, and as first violinist of the Auraeus quartet in concerts throughout Europe.
The only American award winner at the 2005 Sibelius Competition, Steven Moeckel began his musical career at an early age, first as violinist, then performing from the age of eleven as principal soprano soloist for the renowned Vienna Boys Choir for two years. After leaving the choir, he resumed violin studies at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, graduating with honors at the age of nineteen. He immediately assumed the position of Co-concertmaster of Germany’s Ulm Philharmonic, where he remained for three seasons. After further study in the United States at Indiana University with the distinguished American violinist Miriam Fried, Steven Moeckel became concertmaster of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra in 2002. He also leads the chamber group, Ensemble Amabile, and teaches violin at the University of Arizona.
Pianist PAULA FAN has performed as soloist and chamber musician on five continents. As one of the first recipients of the doctorate in the art of Accompanying, she has been in great demand as pianist/coach for numerous internationally recognized artists and has lectured on the subject at educational institutions worldwide. Since the early 1980s, Dr. Fan's interest in her heritage has led her to China, where she joined members of Beijing's Central Philharmonic in the first concert of Western chamber music presented since the Cultural Revolution, and as the first accompanist-coach to be invited by the Chinese Ministry of Culture, organized and accompanied the first evening of art song heard in decades.
With her husband and sonata partner, the late John Denman, Dr. Fan has recorded most of the masterworks of the clarinet repertoire. In addition, she has recorded a number of the solo piano works of Dussek in new editions based on early printed sources, the result of research in libraries in London and Paris. She has broadcast regularly for the BBC, National Public Radio, Radio Television China, Australian radio and other international stations. Currently Dr. Fan is pianist with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and Regents’ Professor at the University of Arizona School of Music.

Memorable entertaining is not about the easy this and store-bought that-if it’s simple, why bother? It’s about inspiration and preparation, about making every occasion as grand as you would if it were the last thing you’d ever do. To that end, Fandango engages your full imagination, to roll up your sleeves, ask your guests to be co-conspirators, and create a gutsy, one-of-a-kind event.

SANDY HILL is a fourth-generation Californian. After graduating from UCLA, she moved to New York City and worked as an editor at Mademoiselle and Bride's, and as a writer, contributing to Vogue, Allure, Men's Journal, USA Today, and NBC. In 2000, after twenty-five years away, she and her husband realized their dream of acquiring a small vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley. Currently, they divide their time among the ranch-vineyard in Los Olivos, New York City, Miami, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and a little town in Mexico called Alamos. This is her first book. every occasion as grand as you would if it were the last thing you’d ever do. Steve Ells

Steve Ells' Aviation Career
Beginning in 1965 when he joined the U.S. Navy, Ells has ridden the wings of aviation to adventures all around the world. Three Vietnam deployments with stops in Capetown, Singapore, the P.I., Wellington, Sydney, Rio de Janerio, St. Thomas, Yokosuka, and transits of the Sundra Straits, the Suez Canal, and an east-to-west rounding of Cape Horn only whetted Ells appetite for adventure.
Thanks to the GI Bill, Ells was able to attend Airframe and Powerplant technicican school, avionics technician school and obtain his Commercial Pilots certificate. From 1970 to the early 1980s, Ells rebuilt a Cessna 140, worked as a line mechanic for a Douglas DC-3 operator, and serve as the Director of Maintenance for a television “importing” business on the Texas/ Mexico border. When the Mexican economy tanked in 1981, Ells flew his 108 hp Piper PA 12 Super Cruiser to Alaska, where he worked as a fish spotter for three years and owned an aircraft maintenance business for 10 years before returning. From 1992 to 2000 he worked as a tech rep, instructor, and editor for the Cessna Pilots Association in Santa Maria, CA. In 2000 Ells was hired by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA). He lives in Templeton, California with his wife Audrey, and is restoring, and flying a 1960 Piper PA 24 Comanche. Steve discovered “Club Pilotos de Mexico” while on assignment in 2007 for the AOPA magazine. We have all enjoyed his many AOPA aircraft evaluations, stories, etc., don’t miss this opportunity to meet a might nice Aviator. Please arrive a few minutes before 2:00 p.m. for Steve’s afternoon talk.

Albert Hall began his culinary career over 35 years ago in metropolitan Washington D.C. At age 16 while working in a local seafood restaurant he was fortunate enough to be pointed in the direction of "Haute Cuisine". Wherever he traveled, Albert found himself in the company of European chefs on a crusade to spread the gospel of an emerging cuisine called "Nouvelle". This was the beginning of modern cooking in America as we know it today and is now a viable contender on the world's food scene.Chef Hall apprenticed at the Statler Hilton in Washington D.C. and then moved on to the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. Albert found himself at the forefront of modern American cuisine and has held chef positions at prestigious institutions such as the Seelbach Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky, L'Auberge de Sedona on Oak Creek, The Phoenician Hotel and Resort and Hacienda del Sol Guest Ranch in Tucson, Arizona. In November of 2004, Albert opened Acacia at St. Philips. Albert's standards are unwavering. His commitment and passion towards the most enjoyable dining experience possible will not fail his guests.
